Advertisers Call on Department of Commerce to Drop Census Citizen Question

August 7, 2018

The Department of Commerce’s announcement that it intended to include a citizenship status question in the upcoming 2020 Census has led to growing concern that this decision would depress accurate response rates and lead to flawed data.

These negative impacts would have substantial adverse effects on the advertising community, who use the data gathered in the Census to allocate resources and perform research. The Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s), the American Advertising Federation (AAF), and the Advertising Research Federation (ARF) wrote a letter strongly urging the Commerce Department not to include this question.
