Welcome and Introductions (10:00am-10:15am)

I.    UPDATE FROM WASHINGTON (10:15am-11:00am)
Summer has arrived in Washington and with elections looming in November, members of Congress are ready to head home and start campaigning over the August recess. Despite that, things remain active in Congress. Tax reform remains on the table and with it the threat of an ad tax. In fact, the Senate Finance Committee has just announced the launch of hearings on tax reform. Food issues also are heating up again with new proposals to tax ads directed to children. Repeated data security issues are keeping privacy concerns at the top of the agenda, and there remains pressure on Congress to do something about patent trolls.

II.    LEGAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE “TOP 5” FOR 2014 (11:00am-12:00pm)
The Legal Affairs Committee recently named the first chair and vice chair in its history - Chris Sloan, Assistant VP & Senior Corporate Counsel at Liberty Mutual and Kathryn Barrett Park, Senior Counsel, Advertising & Brand Management at GE. Our hope is that the Legal Affairs Committee will now take on a more active role both within ANA and with our member companies. To help us with that, Chris has come up with a list of his “top 5” issues that he believes are important for the industry in 2014:

1.    ICANN’s new gTLD program
2.    Collecting and using consumer data
3.    Native advertising
4.    Agency relationships/contracts – best practices
5.    Brand abuse (by partners, vendors, unauthorized persons)

We hope that this list will help jumpstart a lively conversation among committee members on the issues that they think we should focus on going forward.

LUNCH (12:00pm-12:45pm)

This year’s Advertising Law & Public Policy Conference was our most successful in the 10 year history of the conference.  We’d love to hear your input on what worked, what didn’t and what topics you would like us to cover for 2015.

Tara Sugiyama Potashnik from Venable LLP will brief the committee on the latest on the advertising industry’s anti-piracy initiative, which is working on an initial draft of “Core Criteria for Effective Digital Advertising Assurance.” This effort includes the 4A’s and IAB along with ANA and is following up on the Legal Affairs Committee’s effort in drafting a Statement of Best Practices dealing with online piracy in 2012.
