Yolanda Sangweni serves as digital content director for Essence.com. In this role, she is responsible for driving digital growth across platforms and initiating new and exciting digital brand extensions and experiences. Previously, Ms. Sangweni served as entertainment editor for the site. Prior to joining Essence, Yolanda worked as a features editor at Trace Magazine and contributing writer for O: The Oprah Magazine (South Africa), Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, Arise Magazine and Time Out New York, covering music, fashion and culture. Born to a South African freedom fighter mother who fled from the apartheid regime to the United States when Yolanda was a small child, she lived in Harlem during her formative years. A self-described eternal optimist (and Oprah-phile), Ms. Sangweni has a deep-seated love for culture and music. She is also co-founder of AfriPop!, an online destination celebrating what’s new and what’s next in global African culture. Yolanda resides in Brooklyn with her family.
