IV. HOW THE CANADIAN DOWN SYNDROME SOCIETY TURNED SORRY INTO CONGRATU%$#!@ATIONS (11:50AM-12:20PM)
Every baby deserves a warm welcome. But for parents of a newborn with Down Syndrome, they hear "I'm sorry" not "Congratulations. A hurtful comment that implies they should be pitied. CDSS had one goal - to ensure none of these parents ever heard "Sorry" again. In this session, Nancy Crimi-Lamanna, Chief Creative Officer of FCB Toronto and Ben Tarr, Board Director at the Canadian Down Syndrome Society and father of Leo the Lion, his son who lives with Down Syndrome, will explain how they turned "sorry" into a bad word - not only because of the damaging effect it had on parents, but because it was reflective of the stigma and unequal standing that people with Down syndrome still experience. These insights made "Anything but Sorry" Grand Prize winner at the 2018 ANA Multicultural Excellence Awards.

Speakers:
Nancy Crimi-Lamanna – Chief Creative Officer – FCB Canada
Ben Tarr – Member, Board of Directors – Canadian Down Syndrome Society
