ANA Statement on Engel-Yoder Dear Colleague on Preserving Ad Deduction

In response to a letter from 87 Members of Congress to Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) opposing proposals to amortize advertising deductions, Dan Jaffe, Group Executive Vice President of Government Relations at the ANA (Association of National Advertisers) issued the following statement:

“ANA is extremely thankful for the support shown by 87 Member of Congress to preserve the full deductibility of advertising expenses under the tax code.  Advertising’s immediate deductibility has been an important part of the tax code for over 100 years.  We believe this letter by a broad bipartisan group of representatives demonstrates their clear understanding of the value of advertising to each and every congressional district across the United States.  Studies have shown that advertising in 2014 supported 20 million jobs and drove $5.8 trillion in economic activity in the U.S.  The letter also shows that these members believe that changing the tax treatment of advertising expenses would cause undue economic harm to their constituents and the nation as a whole.  We would urge the whole Congress to consider these possibilities when undertaking tax reform.  We thank Congressmen Engel and Yoder for initiating this effort and their colleagues from 36 different states for signing the letter.â€
