The ANA In-House Agency Fact Book is comprised of some of the best client-side marketer in-house agencies in the world. The ANA In-House Agency Fact Book highlights the structure, capabilities, and operations of in-house agencies at ANA corporate member companies. The fact book serves as a reference point for other in-house agencies and those looking to learn more or start their own in-house agency. Each fact sheet explores an in-house agencies capabilities, organizational chart (where provided), and other key data points.

Background

• In 2013, the ANA released the findings from the 2013 ANA In-House Agency Survey, which showed significant growth of in-house agencies at ANA client-side marketer member companies. In fact, the penetration of in-house agencies had increased from 38 to 58 percent, from our 2008 survey. Since then, the ANA has held In-House Agency Days in San Francisco and New York annually, and the attendance at and interest in these events have grown.
In 2017, the ANA created the ANA In-House Agency Committee, which quickly become one of our most popular. Leading from that popularity, we launched a sister chapter on the West Coast in 2018 and in the Midwest in 2019.

Key Findings
  • 57 percent of in-house agencies in this fact book were established in the last 10 years.
  • Most in-house agencies use a small percentage of freelancers, with a vast majority of the work
    completed by full-time employees.
  • Only three in-house agencies do not also have an agency of record and only one of those in-house agencies does not work with external agencies at all.
  • There is an even split among in-house agencies that use a charge back or custom billing method. A few utilize a cost center or combined cost center/charge back billing method.
  • All but one in-house agency works across the entire enterprise.
