Job Summary

The director of marketing & communications is responsible for managing San Diego Gas & Electric's (SDG&E) marketing and communications, media relations, brand strategy, and market intelligence, insights and analytics functions. Drive the development of compelling content for multi-channel strategies including, but not-limited to: direct mail, video, website, email and social media marketing, and advertising. Oversee a team of professionals who proactively and reactively manage the company's media response with local, regional, state and national media outlets, as well as briefings and speeches for the executive team. Oversee market intelligence, insights and analytics team driven to develop marketing effectiveness and customer insights to drive customer satisfaction and adoption of programs and services. Oversee all aspects of the company's brand.

  • Serve as the company's primary external spokesperson and public information officer in elevated situations. Provide 24-hour media and employee communications response during emergency/crisis situations. Manage crisis communications.
  • Drive the creation and management of speaking opportunities and engagements for executives, including the development of briefing documents on wide-ranging topics, speeches, remarks, etc. to drive the company's strategic objectives. Serve as a trusted advisor to executive management on company positioning and issues management.
  • Drive the development of marketing communication strategies for product lines to help SDG&E move closer to its short- and long-term strategic goals. Drive team to conduct thorough evaluations of market dynamics, demographics and competitive environment or niche, overall plan of action, metrics and deadlines. Ensure marketing communication strategies include consideration of internal as well as external risk factors and opportunities.
  • Inspire team to develop and deliver dynamic content across multiple platforms, including digital (email marketing, social media marketing, content marketing, search engine marketing, banner advertising and website content), print and direct mail solutions. Drive awareness of brand, services and products, and create retention as applicable.
  • Drive the development and execution of marketing and communication plans to enhance the company's offerings and energy solutions for customers, while ensuring the integrity of the company's image and branding. Develop the company's promotion activities around offerings, as well as sponsorships, seminars, educational events and other activities. Manage and measure the success of campaigns and programs, ensuring consistency with SDG&E's image.

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing or related field required.
  • Requires 12 or more years of previous corporate, agency or public-sector marketing and/or communications experience.
  • Experience leading teams required.
  • Extensive experience interfacing with senior executives required.
  • Requires persuasive oral communications skills necessary for dealing with a wide range of internal and external audiences. Strong presentation skills for formal and informal presentations to Senior Management.
  • Demonstrated expertise in media relations and communications required. Significant experience as a media spokesperson preferred.
  • Superior management and leadership skills (i.e., creating and working in a team environment, analytical skills, interpersonal and communication skills).
  • Requires expert-level written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated proficiency in copywriting and developing content across channels (such as email, website pages, social media, e-newsletters, print materials).
  • Strategic expertise in handling crisis communications and significant media relations issues preferred.
  • Experience in implementation of integrated communications plans and conducting market research and analyzing impacts preferred.
  • Must have leadership skills with the ability to motivate employees, drive innovation and lead change initiatives while maintaining employee engagement.
  • Ability to develop and/or manage a highly competent team and achieve maximum results by empowering, motivating and coaching employees required.
  • Demonstrated analytical reasoning ability and openness to new ideas. Ability to easily grasp complex issues and ideas required.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines is required.
