Is 2020 Going to Be the Start of a New Hiring Trend?

According to The Creative Group’s latest State of Creative Hiring data, 67 percent of advertising and marketing managers anticipate expanding their team in the first half of 2020, with web and mobile development being its top area for hiring. In addition, 69 percent of employers plan to increase the number of freelancers they use.

This is good news for prospective talent, who already enjoy the benefit of low unemployment. (According to The New York Times, “November was the 21st consecutive month with an unemployment rate of 4 percent or lower” at 3.5 percent.) For employers, however, this upswing can be a challenge, as six in 10 marketing managers surveyed said employee retention is “more difficult now compared to one year ago.”

How can employers combat this — and retain their sought-after talent? Marketers and advertisers surveyed by The Creative Group cited offering better benefits (48 percent) and improving professional training and development (44 percent). Younger and mid-level talent, specifically millennials who are now in their 30s, tend to gravitate to jobs where they feel valued and seen.

"Authenticity is not just one attribute of many that millennials desire or demand. It has taken on the status of an ethos for an aspirational way of living that defines this generation,” Jean McDonnell, director of innovation research and strategy at Sylver Consulting, wrote.

The marketing word of the year for 2019 is "personalization,” according to a survey of ANA members. In their responses to the survey, members stressed the importance of demonstrating value to consumers, staying relevant, and leveraging data to tailor an innovative and intimate consumer journey.

The same, of course, could be said for employees, in that employees want to feel seen, appreciated, and valued — not just another number or person sitting at a desk. Hiring trends have already skewed to becoming more personal, innovative, and tailored to prospective talent, but maybe we’ve only just seen the beginning.
