Brand Activation Legal Committee: June 2018

This event is over.

For June, Venable’s presentation will include a federal regulatory update on the FTC, FCC and FDA, recent state AG activity, false advertising class actions, Lanham Act cases, and a review of recent NAD cases. Presenting will be Melissa Landau Steinman, Christopher Crook and Shahin Rothermel, along with summer associates Nikita Bhojani, Diane Gremillion, and Jose Madrid.

Melissa Landau Steinman, Partner, practices primarily in the areas of advertising and marketing, antitrust, trade regulation, and consumer protection.  She is uniquely familiar with the technology, retail, media, and hospitality industries. Melissa assists companies advertising and marketing their products in traditional and new media: reviewing advertising and marketing materials; vetting pricing and "sales" claims; creating product warranties; advising on product safety issues; and addressing intellectual property and privacy matters. With over twenty years’ experience in the area, she has represented clients in private and government litigation, class actions, Lanham Act cases and Federal and State government investigations.

Christopher Crook, Counsel, is an intellectual property and advertising litigator and trial attorney in Venable's Washington, DC office. His practice focuses on complex litigation in the areas of intellectual property, technology, and advertising; he regularly defends clients in lawsuits brought by competitors, consumers, and regulators in both federal and state courts. Chris has also represented clients in alternative dispute forums, including self-regulatory proceedings before the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau (NAD), arbitrations, and mediations.

Shahin Rothermel, Associate, in Venable's Regulatory Practice Group, where she assists clients with compliance matters before the Federal Trade Commission, state attorneys general, and other regulatory bodies. She has experience counseling clients on a wide range of consumer protection matters, including legal issues related to advertising, privacy, social media, sales practices, warranties, promotions, and sweepstakes.
