IV. SEEKING FAIRNESS: HOW IMPLICIT BIASES CAN UNDERMINE TODAY'S COMPANIES (1:15-2:00PM) Recent findings in experimental social psychology have demonstrated the existence of "implicit biases" – attitudes and stereotypes that we are neither aware of nor necessarily endorse. This concept is increasingly being used to analyze the sufficiency of companies' workplace policies. This session will survey the science of implicit biases with emphasis on real-world consequences within companies. It will also provide potential responses in terms of improving assessment (e.g., initial hiring, performance evaluations), investment (e.g., work allocation, mentoring), and environment (e.g., debiasing, institutional messaging); and reducing potential legal exposure.

Stephanie Wilson, Partner - Reed Smith
