Government Relations

This event is over.

THE LATEST ON FEDERAL PRIVACY LEGISLATION (2:00 – 2:30 PM)
There are now dueling privacy bills in Congress - one from Senate Commerce Chair Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and the other from Senate Commerce Ranking Member Roger Wicker (R-MS) and House Energy and Commerce Chair Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Ranking Member Cathy McMorris Rogers (R-WA). While the bills contain similar provisions on preemption, a private right of action, and the use of data in advertising, there are a few differences. This session will provide an overview of the provisions ANA is most concerned about as well as where we're headed from here.

Speaker:
Stu Ingis, Partner & Chairman, Venable LLP

CHILDREN & FOOD ADVERTISING (2:30 – 2:45 PM)
For the last 10+ years, the Interagency Working Group (IWG) of four federal agencies - the FTC, FDA, USDA, and CDC - has been prohibited from issuing guidelines on food and beverage advertising to children. The Financial Services & General Government Appropriations bill passed recently by the House Appropriations Committee does not contain the prohibition on the IWG. It also contains language in the committee report that the FTC should complete a study using its 6(b) authority of food and beverage advertising to children. We'll provide a summary of the issue and our response.

Speaker:
Lee Anderson, Vice President, Government & Public Affairs, General Mills

POSTAL UPDATE (2:45 - 3:00 PM)
Postal rates went up again on July 10. Combined with postal reform, which became law in April, we hope that the USPS will be on sounder financial footing in the future. We’ll have an update on what you can expect going forward.
