I. "Birth of a Planet" - Bringing DE&I Into Focus (11:15 - 11:50AM)
As a minority- and female-owned company in Richmond, Va., we’ve watched our city go through some major growing pains in the last few years - wounds that could’ve and should’ve been healed more than a century ago. But with history curriculums and public perceptions masked by the Lost Cause narrative and white-run media outlets for the last 100+ years, those wounds weren’t able to begin healing until very recently.

In 2022, we sought to tell a story about why diversity in the media is so essential, and the Richmond Planet and its legendary editor John Mitchell, Jr., were just what we were looking for to bring that to life. The more we learned about the newspaper’s fight against lynching and segregation during the Jim Crow era,
the more we felt compelled to bring this story from out of the archives and before a larger audience with our first-ever documentary: Birth of a Planet. This documentary was the result of countless hours of dedication from every member of our staff. We created this film to make an investment in amplifying the Planet’s powerful voice, one that echoes even louder a century later.
