The latest Census results disclose that the United States is more diverse and multiracial than ever. The multicultural population increased from 36.3 percent in 2010 to 42.2 percent in 2020 and will be the majority in the not-too-distant future.

Why is ANA holding the 2022 Multicultural Marketing & Diversity Conference in Florida?

ANA has received a number of inquiries from our members, asking, "Why is ANA holding the Multicultural Marketing & Diversity Conference in Florida, given the passage of the 'Don't Say Gay' bill, which became law on July 1, 2022?"

The agreement to secure the 2022 venue was signed over three years ago, in June 2019. We need to honor our contractual obligation to hold the event there, or risk substantial financial penalties. As a nonprofit, we cannot afford those penalties.

The ANA is committed to the LGBTQ+ community.

    • The focus of the ANA Multicultural Marketing & Diversity Conference was expanded to include LGBTQ+ content many years ago.
    • The ANA Multicultural Excellence Awards has a LGBTQ+ category.
    • In 2021, ANA established the LGBTQ+ Forum to educate marketers on best practices for inclusion of LGBTQ+ in advertising, provide support for LGBTQ+ marketers, and drive more meaningful community-brand connections.

The ANA shares the goal of GLADD and Equality Florida of ensuring that all students have a healthy environment to learn and thrive and for all parents to know their families are included and respected. The ANA is also mindful that many of our members live and work in Florida and will continue its affirmative inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community and LGBTQ+ marketing at this and future Multicultural Marketing & Diversity Conferences. The ANA's commitment to the LGBTQ+ community remains consistent regardless of the physical location of this conference.

The 2023 ANA Multicultural Marketing & Diversity Conference is already scheduled to be held in California. Plans for the 2024 conference are still TBD, and we will monitor the situation in Florida (and elsewhere) before any final venue decisions are made.
