Roku remains the leading set-top box/software platform for connected TV sets in the U.S. — now hitting 41 million devices, according to Strategy Analytics.

As of the first-quarter, Roku now commands 15.2 percent of all media streaming devices when looking at set-top boxes and Roku-software installs on smart TVs.

Sony Playstation is next, at just over 30 million; Microsoft Xbox around 29 million; Samsung's Tizen at 25 million; Google (Android TV/Chromecast), 23 million; Amazon Fire TV, 21 million; Nintendo, 18 million; Apple TV, 12 million; webOS, at 11 million.

Connected TV devices in the U.S. grew 13 percent year-over-year in the first quarter — adding 15.7 million units. Roku's streaming TV platform accounted for more than 30 percent of those sales. Research says this bring the entire CTV device base to 316 million.

Roku's share of the market is expected to rise to 52 million devices/platforms by the end of the year — taking in a 18% share.

The report also notes rising Amazon Fire TV sales in the first quarter — commanding 12 percent of new connected TV device purchases. Samsung's Tizen, was at 11 percent for this period, with Google (Android TV/Chromecast), 9 percent.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, an Amazon executive said Amazon Fire TV had "over" 30 million users. Some analysts, however, believe there is a question concerning connected TV devices, such as defining "active" users versus "total users."

An Amazon representative tells Television News Daily Fire TV has grown to more than 34 million active users, and is the No. 1 streaming media platform in the U.S., U.K., Germany, India and Japan.
