Marketing veteran Jerri DeVard founded BECA, the Black Executive CMO Alliance, in 2021 to help bridge the corporate diversity gap.

The organization, which now has 38 senior Black marketing executives from such companies as Nike, Progressive Insurance, and UPS, has an increasingly key role to play spurring diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) throughout the marketing and ad industries. It's a tall order.

DeVard, who was previously executive VP and chief customer officer at Office Depot, has some sharp opinions about the current state of diversity in the ad industry, the danger for brands that give DEI short shrift, and how marketers develop new business models to build a more equitable workplace.
